Summary

Globally first location based service and the first GPS equipped mobile phone were introduced in Japan in 2001, today about 90% of all mobile phones include GPS. Next generation augmented GPS has been shown to achieve 3 cm (1 inch) spatial resolution.
Over the last 10 years a very vibrant industry for location based mobile services has developed in Japan. The industry of location based services is estimated to have the potential to reach US$ 12 billion annually. The present report gives an overview of this industry sector.
