R&D in Japan:
Research and development is one of the foundations for Japan's industrial strength. It is quite common for CEOs of companies like Hitachi or NTT-DoCoMo to originate from the R&D divisions, and many smaller Japanese companies have a very strong R&D focus, such as Nichia Chemical Industries where blue and white LEDs for solid state lighting were discovered and brought to industrial application.
Hundreds of foreign companies have established R&D labs in Japan, and our CEO, Gerhard Fasol, came first to Japan in 1984 to help establish a research cooperation with NTT's R&D labs. We have worked with many foreign companies and institutions on R&D issues in Japan.
Success stories:
- Co-initiated a national Japanese R&D focus program on spin-electronic devices and lead a Japanese government R&D project in this field, leading to a number of patent applications for inventions. This field forms the basis for next generation MRAM memories.
- Advised a European liquid crystal production equipment maker on R&D strategy for Japan, refocusing of an existing R&D lab in Japan, potential R&D cooperations with Japan's public and private sectors in the OLED area
- Advised Finland's governmental TEKES R&D funding agency on Finland's R&D strategy in mobile services for the years 2005-2010 from our Japan viewpoint.
- Helped a Glass company in preparations for establishing R&D in Japan
