17. i-Mode and handsets:

17.1 i-Mode handsets:

i-Mode started in February 1999 with simple handsets with black & white screens and low 9.6kbps data connectivity. Today's i-Mode handsets fall into several different classes:

- 900 series are the top range line

- 700 series are the mid-range line

- Raku-Raku phones for the silver market with are designed to be simple to use, with large letters and easy readability

- Children's phones for the pre-school and primary school segment with special security functions, and functions so that parents can remotely determine the location of the phone (and hopefully the child carrying the phone)

- "concept phones": phones which have special functions, or which do not fit into the standard ranges

17.2 i-Mode top range handsets - 900i series:

Mobile phones are typically specified by the mobile operator in Japan (DoCoMo) and mobile phones of a particular series (e.g. the current 906i series in Spring/Summer 2008) have a range of common functions, there is only a small subset of functions which are not common to all phones, and which are free for handset makers to differenciate their offerings.
