11. e-mail, messaging, SMS and i-Mode:

11.1. Which kind of messaging is offered on i-Mode phones:

With almost 50% market share, DoCoMo's i-Mode phones are the dominating mobile phones in Japan. i-Mode phones offer the following types of messaging:

- email with photo and video clip attachments

- "charamail": html formated email, which may include a variety of characters, images, frames etc.

- Message-Free (for opt-in newsletters free of charge)

- Message-Request (for paid subscription only newsletters)

- SMS (SMS is only included to fulfill 3G standard requirements, and is rarely used by Japanese consumers)

11.2. What about emoji (emoticons):

With almost 50% market share, DoCoMo's i-Mode phones are the dominating mobile phones in Japan. i-Mode phones offer the following types of messaging:

- email with photo and video clip attachments

- Message-Free (for opt-in newsletters free of charge)

- Message-Request (for paid subscription only newsletters)

- SMS (SMS is only included to fulfill 3G standard requirements, and is rarely used by Japanese consumers)

11.3. I am in Europe, US, Singapore, Hong Kong, and want to send an SMS to a friend in Japan:

SMS between Japan and other countries works in some cases, and in some cases it does not work. In the case of DoCoMo we found that SMS only works for some selected international connections and by far not for all. We suggest you use mobile email instead.
