Japan's telecommunications sector - the macro trends:

It is generally accepted, that Japan's fixed and mobile broadband sectors are several years ahead of Europe and US as far as the market introduction of advanced services and infrastructure is concerned. The combined annual revenue of Japan's telecom operators is on the order of US$ 200 Billion, indicating the large size of Japan's telecommunications sector. Annual investments by Japan's mobile operators alone have been around US$ 15 Billion/year constantly over the last 10 years. Therefore Japan is extremely interesting for European and US telecommunications and IT solution companies, including start-up companies.

Initially Japan was far left far behind when the internet moved from R&D labs into the mainstream, and NTT continued to promote ISDN and profited from metered dial-up connections, slowing Japan's IT sector. In 2000, Japan formed the "IT Strategy Headquarters" and formulated the e-Japan Strategy I (2002-2003), e-Japan Strategy II (2003-2006), and u-Japan (2007-2010) with the aim to convert Japan into the world's leading IT nation. In our opinion this aim has been largely achieved as far as mobile and fixed line broadband infrastructure is concerned.

However, Japanese mobile phone handset makers despite making some of the most advanced handsets, have not succeeded to develop significant business outside Japan, while DoCoMo's i-Mode has not had major success outside Japan. Today' Japan's telecom industry is challenged to react to iPhone, Google's Android, NOKIA's mobile services and several other significant new developments.

Our company is working since 1996 with Japan's telecom industry, and we produce a series of market overview reports.
